Plant Yourself
Overview:
In groups of 3-4, we designed a signage-led placemaking experience for bike racks. We were required to activate the area surrounding the bike racks. The requirements were simple – for the intervention to remain on the sidewalk and to make sure the ground does not become slippery.
Timeline:
Jan – March 2022
Tools Used:
Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Rhinoceros, Paper
Design Process:
Based on a discussion with my team, we came up with a complex installation concept – to create a community spot, with seating, trash, games, lighting, art, and of course, signage.
Our very first task was to evaluate the site in-person – to measure the dimensions, to analyze the people, to take pictures, and to fully realize the scope of the location. We then created audience personas, to visualize how people could interact with the ideas we had.
Once we finalized the sign types and the structure, we then created the sign location plan, which let us finalize the position of all the signs on/around the structure. We then focused on the graphic design – the colors, fonts, and materials. We then drew out and rendered the structure in multiple views, with measurements for all parts as well.
The main challenge my group faced was that there were only 2 of us. Rendering the structure was also a learning curve. View process book here.
